A Romantic Weekend on Tybee Island

Tybee isn't a resort-town romantic getaway with turndown chocolate and a spa menu. It's a barrier island with a good beach, a few genuinely nice restaurants, and enough quiet corners that a couple can actually hear each other talk. That's the case for it, honestly — a weekend here feels earned rather than packaged. Here's how we'd plan two days.

Friday: arrival and an easy first night

Aim to arrive by mid-afternoon if you can — it gives you daylight to settle in before dinner, and Tybee's evening light over the water is worth being outside for. Check-in here is 4:00 PM; if you're driving in from Savannah or the airport, that timing works out naturally with the drive.

Once you're settled, skip the temptation to plan an elaborate first dinner. A short walk to something casual — StingRay's on Tybee is a block from the Inn and does coastal seafood with real confidence, big portions, a lively room — is the better call. You've been traveling; save the nicer dinner for tomorrow when you're not still shaking off a drive.

After dinner, walk toward the pier. It's the island's natural gathering point in the evening, lit up, usually a few people fishing off the end even after dark, and it's an easy, unplanned way to end a first night without needing a reservation or an agenda.

If your room has rooftop access — ours does, even without a pool on the property — this is also a good night to go up. It's quiet, it's above the noise of the street, and on a clear night it's a genuinely nice way to close out day one together.

Saturday: beach morning, afternoon exploring, a dinner worth planning

Mornings on Tybee are the best-kept secret of a beach trip. Get up before the island fully wakes — a walk on the sand while it's still cool, before the crowds and the heat arrive, is a different experience than the same beach at 1 PM. Bring coffee if your room has the setup for it, or grab it on the way.

Breakfast: we don't serve it on-site, so walk to a diner-style spot nearby — Sunrise Restaurant is a few blocks up if you want something substantial, Mi Vida if you'd rather have coffee and something lighter. Either way, it's a short walk, not a plan you need to make in advance.

Midday, if you want a slower activity together rather than more beach time, this is a good window for a dolphin tour — Tybee's waters have resident pods, and a late-morning or early-afternoon run beats the midday heat while still giving good visibility. It's a nice shared activity that doesn't require much decision-making once you're on the boat.

Afternoon: walk the pier again in daylight, browse the south-end shops, or just go back to the room and do nothing for a couple of hours. A romantic weekend doesn't need every hour scheduled — leaving deliberate white space is part of the point.

For dinner, this is the night to book ahead if you want a sit-down, slightly nicer meal. Sundae Cafe, toward the island's north end, is worth the short drive and the reservation — Southern cooking, a real wine list, and a key lime pie people specifically drive back for. It's not fussy or formal, but it's a step up from the island's casual default, which makes it the right pick for the trip's one "occasion" dinner.

After dinner, if the timing lines up, walk back toward the beach for a last look at the water in the dark before heading in. There's no real activity here — it's just worth doing.

Sunday: a slow morning and the drive home

Check-out is 11:00 AM, which gives you a real morning rather than a rushed one. Use it: one more coffee, one more short beach walk, or — if you didn't get to it Saturday — the Tybee Island Light Station. 178 steps up Georgia's oldest lighthouse is a genuinely nice way to close out a trip together, and the view from the top is worth the climb even on a morning you're not feeling particularly energetic.

If you have more time before you need to leave, a stop in Savannah's historic district on the way out — about 20 to 30 minutes off the island — turns a two-night Tybee trip into a slightly longer day without adding another hotel night. It's optional, but it's an easy add if your schedule allows it.

A note on where to stay

We're honest about our position: Atlantis Inn is on Silver Avenue, about 300 yards from the beach, not directly on it. For a romantic weekend, that's close enough to walk to the sand without paying a beachfront premium, and it leaves you close to the restaurants and the pier too. The Red Room and the Penthouse are the two rooms we'd point a couple toward specifically — the Red Room for its bold, romantic character, the Penthouse for its raised bed and separate sitting area if you want a bit more space to spread out.

Rooftop access is there if you want a quiet spot above the property for a nightcap or a morning coffee together, regardless of which room you book.

The honest version of this trip

Tybee won't do the romantic weekend for you the way a resort with a couples' spa package might. What it offers instead is a genuinely nice beach, a handful of restaurants worth the trip, and enough quiet that you're not fighting for a table or a patch of sand the whole time — provided you're not visiting the peak of a July Saturday, when everything gets busier and the parking gets tighter. Plan around that, and it's a real, low-key romantic weekend rather than a manufactured one.
