This September: Date Nights Out on Tybee and in Savannah

Sunset fell at 7:47 PM on the first of this month. By the 30th it will fall at 7:09. That's 38 minutes of evening gone in a single September, and it's quietly the best thing that happens to a night out here all year: a dinner table at a normal hour now puts you on the sand at exactly the right moment, no loitering over a third coffee required.

This is the evenings-only edition of our September coverage. Here we care only about what happens after about five o'clock: where to eat, what's actually on the calendar, and what a Tybee Island date night in September 2026 looks like from our corner of Silver Avenue.

The default: dinner, then the last of the light

Most good nights out here take the same shape. A table somewhere around six. A slow walk to the water afterward, while the sky finishes what it started. The sand is about 300 yards from our door, a five-minute walk, so the sequencing takes no planning at all. Mid-month, sunset is 7:29 with usable light until about 7:54, which means even a leisurely dinner delivers you to the beach in time. And if the date starts earlier, with a swim before you change for dinner, lifeguards are still on the South Beach towers daily through October 31, from 10 AM to 5:30 PM.

Two ground rules make the walk better. Glass is banned on the beach by city ordinance, so the toast happens at the table or back at the inn, not on the sand. And sea turtle nesting season runs through October, which is one more reason to keep the after-dark stretch of the walk dark and low-key rather than lit by phone flashlights.

That's the frame. What goes in it is mostly a question of which table.

Three tables, three moods

These three are the tables we'd actually send a couple to, ordered by the effort it takes to get there.

The two-minute walk: Raw Ingredients

Around the corner on Tybrisa Street, about 114 yards from our door, there's a small sushi spot called Raw Ingredients: sushi, sake, bowls, and salads on an island where almost everything else swims in a fryer. The room is small and the menu is the point. When the plan is "let's go out" decided at 5:45, this is the shortest possible distance between the idea and the meal.

One practical wrinkle. The restaurant publishes no hours on its own site and the listings around the web disagree about which day it closes, so check before you set your heart on it: the website above, or (912) 499-4178.

The drive across the island: Sea Wolf

Sea Wolf sits at 106 S Campbell Ave on North Tybee, 2.1 miles and about five minutes by car from our end of the island. The trip is part of the appeal. This is the occasion table you make a deliberate journey for: oysters, house-made sausage, fancy cocktails, and real vegan options, on seasonal menus the restaurant updates often enough that its own site points you to Instagram for the current one.

Know the mechanic before you go, because it's unusual. There is no telephone, by the restaurant's own admission, and no reservations. You walk in and put your name down. Weekdays it opens at 4 PM. Weekends run brunch from 11 AM to 3 PM, then dinner from 3. The kitchen goes to 10 and the bar runs later, which suits an evening that started with an early sunset and doesn't feel like ending.

The creekside one: Bubba Gumbo's

About 4.3 miles and ten minutes the other direction, Bubba Gumbo's sits on Lazaretto Creek at the Tybee Island Marina, next to the shrimp docks, at 1 Old US Hwy 80. It's Cajun-leaning local seafood, "a purveyor of fine seafood" from "Tybee's local waters" in the official visitor directory's words, and it has been at it since 1997.

A geography note, offered honestly. Lazaretto Creek is on the island's western, landward side, which is the side of the sky where September's sun goes down between about 7:10 and 7:45. We won't promise you a table facing the sunset, because we haven't confirmed which way the porch points. The timing works if you want to find out for yourselves. Reported hours don't agree either, so call before you drive out: (912) 786-4445.

The rest of the month, date-sized

September is not a festival month on Tybee, and for a couple that's a feature. Here's everything on the calendar that earns an evening, checked against the official Visit Tybee events listing.

Monday evenings: the farmers market at the lighthouse. The Tybee Island Farmers Market runs 4 to 7 PM on the lighthouse grounds at 30 Meddin Drive, Mondays into late October. The September dates still ahead of you: the 14th, 21st, and 28th. It's a drive from the south end, six or seven minutes, not a walk, and parking on the grounds is free but limited, so arrive early in the window. As the first act of a date night it's close to perfect. You browse produce and local makers with the lighthouse standing over the whole thing, and the market releases you at exactly dinner time.

Two nights of live music at the Tybee Post Theater. The island's small historic theater at 10 Van Horne Avenue has The Wooten Brothers on Friday the 11th and On Broadway with the Savannah Men's Chorale on Saturday the 12th. Showtimes and tickets are at tybeeposttheater.org, and the theater's own listings are the ones to trust.

A jazz weekend in Savannah: September 18–20. The Savannah Jazz Festival plays its 45th edition in Forsyth Park, with the park performances free and open to the public and a paid Patron's Tent if you want reserved seats. Forsyth Park is about half an hour's drive off the island. That's close enough to make a full evening of it under the oaks and still sleep at the beach.

One daytime date worth attaching: Fort Pulaski, fee-free on Thursday the 17th. The national monument between Tybee and Savannah waives its entrance fee for Constitution Day (details from the National Park Service). It's roughly 15 minutes off the island, and the drive back onto Tybee crosses Lazaretto Creek, where a creekside dinner is waiting if you've read this far.

What a September evening won't include

The lighthouse. We mention it because it's the plan we most often see couples make and then lose an evening to. The last ticket is sold at 4:30 PM, the site closes at 5, and it's closed Tuesdays altogether. Against a sunset that never comes before 7:09 this month, there is no version of a golden-hour climb. If the lighthouse is on your list, and it should be, make it an afternoon (adults $14), then take the evening to one of the tables above. What to wear after dark

Short section, because September makes it easy. Nights settle to around 70 by the Savannah-area climate normals, so the dress code is one light layer over whatever dinner deserves. Measurable rain finds about ten days of the month, so a packable rain layer earns its spot in the bag, and a plan that can slide one evening later in the trip beats one that can't. Ending the night on Silver Avenue

Every plan above finishes the same way: the short walk or drive back to Silver Avenue.

Parking shapes these evenings more than you'd expect. Ours is free and on-site, one car per room, while parking off the property runs $4 an hour citywide, enforced 8 AM to 8 PM year-round. So the pattern that works is simple. Leave the car in our lot for anything on this end of the island, Raw Ingredients and the beach are both an easy walk, and spend the car only on the north-end table, the creek, the market, and Savannah.

The rooftop is a quiet spot above the property, and it's where we'd end most of these nights. Carry two glasses up and have the toast there, since glass can't come to the beach anyway.

The morning after deserves a plain word too: there's no breakfast on site, and we'd rather say so than imply otherwise.
